The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
