A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
